Staying one step ahead

The design, installation and maintenance of traffic signals is a competitive and fast-moving world in which nothing stands still for long. The development of new and innovative products has helped TSEU to gain a prominent position in the market. But, says the company, training is just as important in staying one step ahead of the crowd.

Innovation is a key theme that runs through the history of TSEU. From the long established detection products to the outstanding 3G LED Signal Head the company has consistently been one of the UK market leaders. Impressive as these products are, however, it’s the people behind them that enable TSEU’s customers to make the most of the benefits the products can deliver.

High quality training in technical and maintenance support is seen as one of the main reasons for TSEU’s consistent growth in recent years. "Our investment in training is directly linked to our ability to provide ongoing customer satisfaction as well as being able to recruit, retain and motivate experienced and highly valued staff," says the company’s Field Service Training Manager, Brian Cochrane.

Health & Safety Manager, Donald Bellshaw agrees. "Wherever possible, TSEU’s policy is not only to recruit appropriately trained personnel but also to enable employees to be promoted ‘through the ranks’. The inevitable consequence of this policy is that continual assessment, identification of training needs and delivery of appropriate training is essential. That’s the only way to ensure that the highest standards of competency can be achieved and maintained."

The comprehensive and constantly developing range of training courses covers both the specific needs of employee needs and the particular requirements of customers. In order to achieve the high standards the company sets for itself, TSEU has become a Highway Electrical Academy certificated Registered Training Organisation dedicated to sectors 8, 9b & 10.

"Training courses are taught by our HEA Approved Trainers who deliver courses at our regional service centres," says Brian Cochrane. Courses include Module 1 & 2 Health & Safety training, as well as Modules 301 Traffic Principles through to product specific Module 6 courses.

Running courses in accordance with HEA criteria has seen a substantial increase in TSEU’s training programme. Through its involvement in the Sector Scheme Registration Board and the Technical and Training Committee, the company is also helping the HEA to standardise and refine working practices and standards across the traffic signals industry.

Brian Cochrane comments: "In my view there has never been a more exciting time to be involved in the traffic industry and, with TSUK, the prospects for first class employee training and career enhancement have never been greater."
