Focus on Glasgow

In 2003 TSUK undertook one of its largest ever projects when they were awarded the Glasgow City Council Maintenance contract.

At that time the company's Glasgow depot had just 8 members of staff and a massive recruitment process was undertaken to enlist the correct skills and experience required to carry out the tasks that lay ahead. Four years down the line, staffing levels have risen by 500%. "Bringing in the right people was essential which in turn has enabled us to deliver a first class service on all fronts to Glasgow City Council and to meet the high standards set by a contract of this importance," says Mark Cook, Regional Manager.

The maintenance engineering team is now well established and has a good blend of experience and youth, ranging from over 30 years in the business to just 1 year. The engineers and maintenance technicians cover all fault conditions, ranging from call outs to road accidents and - thanks to the wide range of knowledge within the team - fast response and clearance times are achieved in line with key performance indicators.

On the installation front, TSEU's Glasgow depot has more installers than ever before. The team works in all weathers and has repeatedly delivered a high standard of workmanship on jobs as small as a pelican crossing or as large as the multimillion pound Finnieston bridge project.

Throughout the contract there has been a continual process of improving and maintaining old equipment, identifying safety issues and generally upgrading the look and operation of traffic signals within Glasgow. "Combined with the behind the scenes work carried out by office and workshop staff we constantly aim to achieve maximum customer satisfaction. It's as simple as that," says Mark. Typical works carried out for Glasgow City Council include full and comprehensive Site electrical inspections that identified and solved substantial site earthing problems. In addition, more than 80 feeder pillars were identified as being electrically unsafe and new pillars installed.

All TSEU sites have now been fitted with Push Button ELV Waits and Tactile motors and there is an ongoing programme of tactile motor installations at suitable Peek / Siemens sites. More than 340 sites have also been tested for Core to Core and cable tagged at the Pole Caps and Controller to assist future site maintenance. More than 30 need remedial works. The TSEU team is on schedule to test all sites by the end of May 2008.

There is an ongoing program of visual site improvement works, backing board replacements, wait panel changes, texture coating of Controllers etc. Other works include CCTV, Gateway and Information VMS, fitting pole tags to over 100 sites, the minimisation of RTA damage by using cranked poles and the reduction of pedestrian accidents to zero at one site thanks to the introduction of a countdown timer. By introducing stringent Health & Safety procedures and an Environmental Policy that ensures no mess is left on site, the quality of work is maintained at a high standard on every job.
