Focus on the South & South East

TSEU's Southern Area - stretching from Norfolk to Cornwall, including London, and the Home Counties – has seen a significant increase in activity and a doubling of turnover since moving to new headquarters near Dartford 4 years ago.

With around 70 staff, all accredited under National Highways Sector Scheme 8, the area has recently also passed an ASLEC audit. In addition the main depot and sub-depots in Welwyn Garden City, Aylesford and Cambridge have been accredited to the BS EN ISO 9001:2000 quality standard, and BS EN ISO 14001 Environmental Standard.

Dedicated teams cover a specific geographical and customer base, providing a single point of contact, excellent communications and high service levels for customers who include Transport for London and the County Councils of West Sussex and Hertfordshire. The area is also working in partnership with Cambridge and Peterborough and, of course, is part of the new Kent Highway Services alliance featured in this issue of Signal magazine.

As Service Contractor for the Boroughs of South and South East London, TSEU staff provide maintenance and installation support to TFL, as well as delivering engineering expertise, technical support, the commissioning of the public transport priority systems and support for the client's modernisation programme. Standards are consistently high. As TFL commented, during a regular liaison meeting, with reference to just one example of the quality of work carried out, "TSEU provides an exceptional level of
Lamp Maintenance, way above the competition."

In West Sussex, TSUK is working on an informal partnership basis to provide maintenance, installation and full turnkey packages. As part of the agreement with the client, the area is used for trialling and developing new products.

Meanwhile, in Hertfordshire, a local manager has been appointed recently to provide even greater focus on meeting customer requirements, which include maintenance of traffic signals and associated equipment in the county. Acting as the CDM Principal Contractor, TSEU is also currently working on 4 major site refurbishments undertaking all civil engineering works. In addition, a major upgrade programme is being undertaken in 2007/8 to install 350 3G LED signals and all the traffic signals on 10 sites will be completely refurbished.

Following an extensive tendering process, partnering contracts have been agreed with Cambridge and Peterborough Councils and a new depot has been opened in Cambridge. Although the partnership contracts came into force on 1st April, TSEU were providing cover from 30th March.
